On Sept. 19-21, the St. Olaf women’s tennis team traveled to St. Peter, Minn. to compete in the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The Oles performed exceptionally well in an event that featured 25 of the top schools in the region.
Lisa Hall ’16 starred for the Oles, powering her way through the the quarter-finals of the singles tournament before falling to the number-one ranked Megan Humphreys ’17 in straight sets.
Kristi Kroker ’15 opened up her campaign with a strong 6-1, 6-1 victory, before falling 6-7, 6-4, 8-10 in an epic battle against Shirlene Luk ’15.
In the doubles event, Hall also recorded several victories with partner Margaret Zimmerman ’18. Hall and Zimmerman won their first three matches before falling in the quarter-finals.
Also hosted at the Swanson Indoor Tennis Center and Brown Outdoor Courts in St. Peter was the Gustie Fall Invite. The event is broken into smaller draws, allowing players to gain valuable match experience during the fall.
Zimmerman won four consecutive matches to claim her bracket. Throughout the four matches, she dropped only eight games in a dominant display.
Eric McDonald ’18 also had success in her first collegiate competition, winning several matches, including two in super tie-breakers.
McDonald and Bailey Kent ’16 cruised to the final of their double draw before unfortunately having to withdraw before the final match.
The Oles will face off against College of Saint Benedict on Oct. 4 in what will be the final competition of the fall season. They will then turn their attention towards preparing for the regular season, beginning in early February.
