Veselica Spring Concert preview
Now that the Companydance has come and gone for this year, the St. Olaf Dance Department prepares for its annual Veselica Spring Concert.
Veselica is a student dance company founded in the late 1980s by dance professor Anne von Bibra. Veselica was formed to provide a global perspective; it attempts to spread awareness of different cultures. Throughout its run, Veselica has featured dances from thirty countries around the world.
This year, Vesilica’s Spring Concert is titled “Dance Stories.” The performance will include Colombian, Hawaiian, Indonesian, Iranian, North Bulgarian, Spanish and Uzbek dances.
Their performance will feature songs such as “Blue Rondo à la Turk” by artist Dave Brubeck, a performce of the Mexican “Folklórico Dance” from Vera Cruz, and the “Rapper Sword Dance” from England.
Throughout the process, members of the ensemble had the opportunity to work with guest choreographers such as Michael Pili Pang and Andrea Conger, who specialize in specific international dance styles.
Performances will be held in Studio One in the Center for Art and Dance on April 12 and April 13 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 14 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. There will be a reception following the Friday evening and Saturday matinee performances. Tickets are free and open to the public.
