In the early morning of May 1, a St. Olaf student intruded into an Ytterboe Hall dorm room and physically assaulted another student with a knife and hammer in an act that has been charged as premeditated attempted murder. Three students intervened to stop the assault. The victim and one of the intervening students were treated for injuries at Northfield Hospital, while another intervening student declined treatment from paramedics and the third did not suffer physical injuries. Bail was set for the perpetrator at $1,000,000 unconditionally or $500,000 with added conditions including that they wear a GPS monitoring device. Students were informed of the incident via email by St. Olaf Director of Public Safety Derek Kruse at 3:23 a.m. on May 1. In the interest of respecting the victim’s privacy, the Messenger will not be publishing the names of those involved at this time.
