With the temperature staying in the upper 70’s and days remaining sunny, Oles have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather this fall by getting outside and getting active. No matter what day it is, once afternoon classes draw to a close, groups of students pop up like mushrooms to throw a frisbee on Melby lawn, kick around a hacky sack on the quad, or enjoy some sand volleyball outside of Ytterboe. These games are a fun, laid-back way to take time from classes and homework and spend some moments with friends in the sunshine.
However, it doesn’t necessarily need to be your best friends with whom you play these games. I joined two girls I’ve never met before on the Ytterboe lawn to throw around a frisbee after a long week on Friday. It was a wonderful experience to meet new people, chat about classes and where we’re from, and relax with the rhythmic pattern of throwing. I have also bought my own hacky sack to kick around with my friends, which has proved rather challenging—it is harder than it looks!—but it affords us a wonderful way to take a break from our studying or reading that isn’t simply scrolling through our phones.
If you have been itching to try one of these popular games lately but have hesitated to reach out to someone, I highly encourage you to take that chance. It may be awkward to approach a group at first, but, in my experience, you could leave with some new acquaintances, a more relaxed mind after playing an enjoyable game, and you’ll have soaked up some sunlight before winter rolls around.
