National Egg Day on June 3 is one of the more obscure national holidays on the calendar, but to keep from sharing about it would be incredibly shell-fish of me. I want to share why I celebrate this eggs-cellent day and perhaps why you should, too.
It all started my junior year of high school, dying eggs for Easter at my friend’s house. There were six of us gathered together — one on FaceTime due to COVID–19 — and one of my friends could not stop making egg puns. Seriously. We dyed our eggs and went home, but even at school she kept cracking these yolks like there was no tomorrow even with books. Ever heard of “Eggs” Lewis and J.R.R. “Yolkien”? Naturally, with our eggs-pertise in egg jargon, we dubbed ourselves “the Eggxperts.” Thus began a slightly egg-centric friendship spanning the rest of high school and into college. We eggs-plored the North Shore together during the summer, cracked eggs on our heads when annually dying them, included eggs and egg puns in speeches and presentations at school, put together an “Eggxperts” photo board for grad parties, and
naturally indulged in making eggs and egg-related dishes, our most eggs-travagant being homemade pasta.
I’m not yolking when I say that being a part of the “Eggsxperts” is one of the greatest gifts of my life. Not only do I have some egg-citing memories and stories, but I know I have a group of people who will be there for me through whatever comes my way. Even though National Egg Day may be a rather silly holiday, it’s a good reminder to appreciate all the eggs you have in your basket — the people who know how to crack you up and will go the eggs-tra mile for you no matter what.
