I am from Panama, a tropical country where the average weather year-round varies between 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Last year, I experienced my first seasonal cycle ever, so unlike the majority of St. Olaf’s student body, I had never experienced winter. Here are my best tips for out-of-state or international Oles who are not accustomed to cold weather:
Dress for the weather: Stop wearing flip-flops and shorts, even though you really want to. You will be strong enough eventually. (I am now.)
You can build up your tolerance to the cold by spending time in nature and exposing yourself to it.
Take vitamin D! So important! PSA: You can get some from Health Services for $3.
Cover your neck! Get a nice scarf or gaiter so you don’t get sick!
Winter boots are a huge game changer. They will allow you to spend time outdoors regardless of how icy the terrain is.
Invest in thermal long underwear so you can enjoy yourself no matter how cold it gets.
Try out winter sports and activities! Winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating help you create a positive association with the season and make it more familiar and fun. Friendly tip: You can rent a lot of outdoor gear from St. Olaf’s Outdoor Recreation Program (STORP) for free!
