With the emergence of Charli xcx’s new album “Brat” — which was all the rage this summer — along with her and Troye Sivan’s Sweat Tour, the formerly popular club music genre is back. The Sweat Tour definitely brings back hints of the past, when staying up from sunset to sunrise was a peak experience and nothing but party drugs, dreams, and alcohol flowed through the veins of people in the clubs. I mean, honestly, who needs eight hours of sleep, water with a meticulously-placed lemon, a 15-step skincare routine, and an overall “clean girl” aesthetic when adrenaline, Redbull, messy floors, smudged eyeliner, and pure euphoria can easily fulfill one’s needs?
Now don’t get me wrong, I love “Brat” and the Sweat Tour as much as any other college partier, but I feel that there needs to be a bit of a cultural reset with what music the DJs are playing in Northfield currently. The perfect playlist for Northfield should go back to the past, specifically the era of the 2000s and 2010s.
This era was easily the best — or one of the best — times for club and party music. There was little to no photo documentation, just pure vibes and dancing. And of course, it had the perfect DJs and songs. The era’s artists truly highlighted the party culture, especially with Kesha’s “Your Love Is My Drug,” 3OH!3’s “DONTTRUSTME”, Pitbull, AFROJACK, Ne-Yo, and Nayer’s “Give Me Everything (feat. Nayer),” Nicki Minaj’s “Pound The Alarm,” Rihanna’s “S&M,” Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater,” Britney Spears’ “(You Drive Me) Crazy,” and Adam Lambert’s “If I Had You.”
These songs bring back a sense of community and party life, where everyone danced on tables and made plenty of mistakes every Friday or Saturday night, but they lived in the moment, so who cared if you threw up outside the bar in a tree? These artists brought a fun vibe to their music. It was all very upbeat and fun and you couldn’t listen to it and be in a bad mood (usually). Having a 2000s setlist to DJ parties in Northfield would make for one of the best sets and would create an amazing atmosphere for chunky glitter eyeshadow, hair extensions, smudged black eyeliner, and a way to the party but no way back. Keep an ear open for any of these songs at the next Carleton party!
