On March 14 in Rochester, N.Y., three of our own St. Olaf’s Men’s Track and Field team earned Second Team All-American honors on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Max Albertson ’27, Kevin Turlington ’26, and Sean Hartney ’25 all placed in the top 16 in their events, after qualifying for nationals for the first time. The trio of national qualifiers became the joint-highest total earners for St. Olaf since 2017.
Earning a Second Team All-American honor means that an athlete is one of the top performers in Division III Indoor Track & Field. These athletes are awarded based on remarkable performances in their respective sports at either championships or other major events. The athletes are also nominated by their head coaches and individually selected by All-American committees.
Albertson outperformed his seed — he placed as the No. 17 seed and finished in 10th place in the long jump event. Albertson finished only one spot away from qualifying for the finals. He became the first national qualifier in the long jump since 2002, and the third national qualifier for the long jump in program history (1986, 2002, 2025).
Turlington also outperformed his seed in the 5,000-meter run. After being placed at the No. 18 seed, Turlington sat at 17th for nine laps, then worked his way up to earning 11th place. He ran a time of 14:27.39, which was the second-fastest time of his career. Turlington is now the second-highest finish in the St. Olaf 5,000-meter run history.
Hartney got the final All-American honor in the one-mile run event. After also being placed at the No. 18 seed, Hartney ran a time of 4:15.69, earning him the 17th spot, but after a disqualification, he finished 16th in the one-mile run. Hartney then became the first national qualifier in the one-mile run since 2019, and the 11th national qualifier since 2012.
Overall, this was an amazing showing for the three athletes, and a great way to end the indoor season for the track and field team!
