There have been a lot of debatable choices in politics right now and insane policies that the Trump administration has tried to pass. These policies include tariffs, which only hurt consumers, cutting back on important environmental policies and allowing for logging in our National Parks, as well as directly going against the Constitution in so many ways. Most importantly, Trump has also illegally sent back immigrants and those on visas without reason, going so far as to mistakenly send a Maryland man with legal status to a high-grade prison in El Salvador. This is all to say that the political sphere right now is not going well, especially with the newest administration. Not shockingly, the Trump administration has also gone after colleges and ordered that they dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, something that the administration wants to do everywhere, not just with colleges. But Harvard did not comply and instead is suing the Trump administration.
Cutting funds to a private college is a tricky situation, but I believe that in most cases it should not be allowed. While colleges don’t receive funds directly from the government, they get funding through aid programs like the Pell Grant. These programs are vital to the student body in affording private college costs. This is the same when considering what is happening with Harvard and the government right now, given that I’m sure the funding they are taking away relates to these aid programs.
What the government is doing right now with Harvard showcases that they are not keen on giving support to college students and educational institutions, and is foreshadowing that potentially worse policies could come along. I think that Harvard is doing the right thing by standing up and suing what is definitely unconstitutional. Many other colleges have complied with the Trump administration, which can be understood given that funding is essential, but these programs are important and cannot be cut.
