Of all the lunch options on campus, the sushi burrito is by far the most polarizing. While some question the concept itself, others have concerns about the raw fish and its freshness. However, amidst this controversy, I have found peace in the sushi burrito, and I must confess that I am a sushi burrito defender. Compared with all the other dining options on campus, the sushi burrito has three things that other options lack: consistency, efficiency, and vegetables. For these reasons, I will defend the sushi burrito.
One of the sushi burrito’s greatest strengths is its consistency. Compared to other lunch options, the sushi burrito is dependable. In Stav, options change daily. Although Med Bowl has consistent options, the quality of the food, especially the meat, can vary. In addition, the portions at the Med Bowl can be very hit or miss. The opposite is true for the sushi burrito. Every day, the portion size and options remain the same. In the midst of food uncertainty, the sushi burrito offers a sense of consistency.
In addition to consistency, the sushi burrito is efficient. Since all the sushi burritos are prepared, the line moves quickly. Waiting in line for the Med Bowl can feel like waiting in line at Disneyland. When grabbing lunch between classes, it’s nice to know your lunchtime will be spent eating your food rather than waiting in line for it. The same cannot be said for Stav. Escaping the congestion for the fast-moving sushi burrito line allows for a calm lunchtime experience.
I believe the sushi burrito’s greatest strength is its contents. I will admit that the fish in the sushi burrito can lack luster; although the texture of the fish is okay, the taste is often bland. But the tofu sushi burrito is one of the best vegetarian lunch options on campus. Instead of a few measly chickpeas from the Med Bowl, the tofu sushi burrito provides a filling vegetarian meal. Additionally, all sushi burritos feature marinated cucumbers and carrots. Some even have avocado. When it comes to getting all your vegetables, the sushi burrito presents a new way to get your greens that leaves you feeling full and satisfied.
Although the sushi burrito may not be for everyone, its considerable strengths demonstrate its value as a new lunch option. People like and dislike the sushi burrito for a variety of reasons, but for me, the consistency, efficiency, and vegetables are the reasons I keep coming back.
