There are more than just varsity sports here on the Hill, and Women’s Club Soccer has been killing it so far this season. Their first game against Carleton College across the river ended with a winning score of 6-3. Then, at Macalester College, the team absolutely crushed the Scots with a 5-0 win. They recently had another game on Rolf Mellby field against the Carleton Knights as Homecoming and Family Weekend came to an end.
On Sunday, Oct. 12, the Women’s Club Soccer team competed against Carleton College in a tight battle. The Oles kept fighting as each minute ticked by during the cloudy and rainy day. The Knights scored early on in the game, placing the first goal on the board. But the Oles kept fighting, making sure to communicate with each pass to ensure team cohesion. They had spectators nearly flying out of their seats in the stands as the ball kept volleying between the two penalty areas. As they neared halftime, Thyme Lang ’27 made a beautiful corner kick, slamming the ball right into the Carleton net to tie the score. Moving into the second half, both teams competed hard, with shots constantly blocked and saved on each end of the field. The Oles kept their spirits strong, not loosening their efforts as the time passed. After the whistle, the score stayed 1-1 as both teams left the field.
In an interview with The Olaf Messenger, Kate Skjeldestad ’28 spoke on their culture that fosters strong relationships between teammates on and off the field. She has played soccer since she was five and always found the best part of it is the friends that she makes on the team.
“Going to practice is always the highlight of my day ’cause everyone’s just so happy, and we joke so much at practice. And we’re all really supportive of each other,” Skjeldestad said.
What contributes to the electrifying atmosphere on the field is the Captains of Fun who hold social activities for the entire team to bond at. Additionally, after practice, the Women’s Club Soccer team always has team dinner together.
“That’s where I made a lot of friends on the team,” Skjeldestad said.
The Women’s Club Soccer team is open to any students who are interested and willing to join. Join these Oles in the spring or following fall season by emailing one of the executive officers.
