Kamala Harris (Democrat)
Kamala Harris announced her candidacy on July 21, 2024. The Democratic Party elected her as the party’s nominee with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) as her running mate. Kamala Harris is the 49th Vice President of the United States. Vice President Harris, whose campaign slogan is A New Way Forward and Freedom, has focused her campaign on reducing child poverty, supporting labor unions, affordable healthcare, and paid family leave. Vice President Harris also said she supported the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, supported red flag laws, universal background checks, and an assault weapons ban. Key policy initiatives during Vice President Harris’ tenure have been work in the area of voting reforms, easing immigration in the U.S.-Mexico border and abortion access. As Vice President, Harris has served as the chairwoman of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment and the White House Task Force to Address Online Harassment and Abuse.
Donald Trump (Republican)
Donald Trump announced his candidacy on November 15, 2022. The Republican party elected him as the party’s presidential nominee with U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate. Donald Trump was the 45th president of the United States. Former President Trump whose campaign slogan is America First and Make America Great Again, has focused his campaign on the weakened economy, the open border, energy production, and foreign policy and military strength. Former President Trump has said he is bringing America back to “the golden age” and has deemed the US a “Failing Nation.” Key policy initiatives during Former President Trump’s first term included the United States passing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and First Step Act in 2018, withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, reducing the size of the ISIS caliphate, and establishing the Space Force as an independent military branch.
Jill Stein (Green Party)
Jill Stein announced her candidacy on November 9, 2023. The Green Party selected her as the party’s 2024 presidential nominee with Butch Ware as her running mate. Stein was also the 2016 and 2012 Green Party candidate for President of the United States. Stein has focused her campaign on environmental, economic, and foreign policy issues. Stein said she would declare a climate emergency, enact a Green New Deal policy, and create union jobs. Stein also supports Medicare for All, increasing affordable housing, and making it easier for individuals seeking entry into the United States to get work permits. On foreign policy, Stein focuses on the war in Gaza as, “in many ways, a microcosm of the U.S. empire, and to fix the crisis in Gaza we must also address the empire.”
Chase Oliver (Libertarian)
Chase Oliver announced his candidacy on April 4, 2023. The Libertarian Party selected Oliver as its presidential nominee with Mike ter Maat as his running mate. In Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey, Oliver laid out his campaign platform. His focus is on individual rights, reforming the two-party system, and a foreign policy of endearing peace at home and abroad. Oliver has also emphasized his empathy and adaptability as key traits he would bring in the presidential role.
