Following the theme of “decades,” the fall 2024 figure skating show was filled with exhilarating performances, with background tracks ranging from Prince to Billy Joel to Michael Bublé. Each performance featured a song from a different decade. With amusing trivia in between, the audience was engaged with each performance. As the skaters performed seemingly impossible tricks, the audience gasped, cheered, and clapped.
Elisa Engelken ’28 is a member of the freestyle team and gave some insight on how exactly the figure skating club works, and how they pulled the show together, in only two months. Engelken said the club is divided into two sections, the freestyle and club skaters. The freestyle team usually consists of members that have been skating for longer and have more experience, whereas the club team consists of a range of complete beginners to skaters with a bit less experience. As Engelken says, anyone is welcome to join the club, even if they’ve never skated before! The club practices twice a week, and the freestyle team provides lessons to the club skaters for half an hour during that time.
The performances consisted of a group performance from the freestyle team, solo performances from each of the freestyle team members, a club group performance and a conjoint group performance. The shows are so much fun, and I would definitely recommend going to the next one.
Engelken also noted that the ice show occurs every year, and that they will also have more performances throughout the year, including one in the spring and some during intermissions in hockey games. The club also welcomes donations from anyone able, ino order to fund the equipment to keep the club running. The donation link can be found in their bio on Instagram, (@stofigureskating) and every donation is appreciated.
