With the weather getting colder it seems that winter is upon us, and with the cold weather comes a million things to christen in the season. To help create the perfect winter wonderland this season, here are some pieces of media that help me get into the festive mood.
For me, winter starts the moment I start listening to “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney, which was in this movie I used to watch when I was younger called “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie”. It was not the claymation one, but an animated one from 1998. The film wasn’t the greatest thing in the world, but it was still comforting. So now, whenever I hear “Wonderful Christmastime”, I think of it.
Another song that immediately tells me it is winter is “The Great Divide” by the McClain Sisters from the Disney Tinkerbell movie, “Secret of the Wings”. Not only was this movie peak cinema, but also this song is exactly what winter sounds like to me. I hear the song and can already smell the snow coming. Speaking of smelling snow, right as the winter months start I always try to watch season 1, episode 8 of Gilmore Girls titled “Love and War and Snow”, because the way Lorelai loves snow is the same way I love snow. I grew up in Ely, Minn., where there was more snow than the population of the town. So, Stars Hollow has always felt very similar to my own town, which makes this episode my favorite in the entire show. It reminds me of what my town looked like when I was younger during the winter, and I hope it will look like that in the future.
Finally, in my family when my sister watches a Christmas movie, it snows. I do not have this curse, so I can watch Christmas movies whenever, but I still try to limit it to the holiday season. One movie that I watch all the time in the winter is the 1992 classic, “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” When I was younger, this was my “Frozen.” I watched it every single day with my dad. In this day and age I still watch it, but mostly keep it for the winter months. I know every word, but that doesn’t matter. It is a perfect movie and I will stand by that until the end of my days. All these media outlets come together to create the perfect winter wonderland, in my opinion.
