As a sophomore who witnessed the terrors of last year’s housing process, the idea of informal housing is really cool to me. It makes me happy to know that there is a way for people to not have to be a stress ball of emotions during the week before spring break, but it does also scare me. It brings into question if there will be anything left for people to have after this informal housing period. I know my group is trying to get a 10-person pod, and I worry about how many people want to do that as well.
The unknown of it all is distressing, and the idea that if you don’t get housing on campus you have to live in a nursing home seems unacceptable in my opinion. Last year, no one wanted to be in the pods, so many students were forced to be there. Will the same thing happen with the retirement home? I just don’t think that’s acceptable. This college talks all about community, but then they want to stretch us out all over Northfield against our will just because they don’t have enough room? I get it, a college is a business and they always want to make more and more money, but they also need to make sure they are taking care of the people already present in their community. Stuffing them into a retirement home like sardines is not the way to accomplish that.
