I am from Panama, a tropical country where the average weather year-round varies between 75-90 degrees Fahrenheit. Last year, I experienced my first seasonal cycle ever, so unlike the majority of St. Olaf’s student body, I had never experienced winter. Here are my best tips for out-of-state or international Oles who are not accustomed to cold weather:
- Dress for the weather: Stop wearing flip-flops and shorts, even though you really want to. You will be strong enough eventually. (I am now.)
- You can build up your tolerance to the cold by spending time in nature and exposing yourself to it.
- Take vitamin D! So important! PSA: You can get some from Health Services for $3.
- Cover your neck! Get a nice scarf or gaiter so you don’t get sick!
- Winter boots are a huge game changer. They will allow you to spend time outdoors regardless of how icy the terrain is.
- Invest in thermal long underwear so you can enjoy yourself no matter how cold it gets.
- Try out winter sports and activities! Winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and ice skating help you create a positive association with the season and make it more familiar and fun. Friendly tip: You can rent a lot of outdoor gear from St. Olaf’s Outdoor Recreation Program (STORP) for free!
