On Oct. 11, a colorful addition was made to the Northfield community: The Boho Peacock. Through this eclectic clothing and accessories boutique, owner Ronica Roberson aims to bring some art to the area.
“I view fashion as art and the human body as a canvas … I love to mix textures and put together an interesting color palette,” Roberson said in an email interview with The Olaf Messenger.
The store’s pieces go through a unique selection process: if it’s fun, it’s in. “I love colorful clothing with bold patterns,” Roberson said. “I adore patent leather and anything beaded. If it’s shiny, I collect it.”
Roberson and her son are both on the autism spectrum, and they have a unique approach to picking pieces based on certain features.
“We like to select items by feel,” Roberson said. “We select fabrics because they feel good and jewelry because it’s fun to touch and play with.”
They also bring some of their personal interests into the store, such as Art Nouveau, crochet, the Renaissance Festival, and of course, peacocks.
The Boho Peacock’s environment is shaped by Roberson’s perspective as well. To make it a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds, Roberson credits the building itself: “The exposed limestone brick walls contribute to the feeling of calm and safety in the store … something about the limestone and the colors in here feels tranquil and inviting.”
Overall, Roberson wants to do some good in the Northfield community through her work.
“It’s important to me to make the world a more beautiful place by any means I can, whether through graphic design, fashion, or decorating,” Roberson said. “I feel better about the world and my place in it when I turn my little corner of it into something beautiful and joyful.”
