On Saturday, Nov. 1, the St. Olaf Figure Skating Club hosted its Fall Ice Show, Disney Channel on Ice, at Skoglund Ice Arena. The event opened with a performance by the Freestyle Gold Group set to a High School Musical mashup. The group’s synchronized movements were graceful and effortless, showcasing impressive technique and precision. The show continued with solo and small group performances by club members and concluded with a finale featuring all 16 skaters.
In an interview with The Olaf Messenger after the show, co-president of the Figure Skating Club Kayla McMayer ’26 said, “I’m feeling so proud of how far we’ve come. In our first show, as freshmen, we had just six freestyle skaters. Over the past four years, we’ve really streamlined the shows so they have themes, costumes, and consistent social media advertising.”
The Disney theme was very well received by the crowd, with people singing and dancing along as the skaters performed. Each skater did an impressive job, considering the group only had about a month to put the show together. The hard work and hours of practice were apparent throughout the entire show. My favorite solo performances were by Edie Creamer ’28, skating to “The Climb” from the “Hannah Montana” movie, and Olivia Ceminsky ’26, skating to “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’” from “Teen Beach Movie.” That said, each performance was so amazing it is impossible to just have a few favorites.
“I feel a little sad that we performed in our last fall ice show at St. Olaf,” McMayer said, “But I’m also already looking forward to the other exciting things we have in store for the rest of the year — especially our hockey performances and Spring Ice Show.”
