“The name is Mamdani: M-A-M-D-A-N-I.”
The words above are part of a song Zohran Mamdani’s social media team used to boost his campaign as he was running for New York mayor. He has since won the election and will start his role as mayor of New York City on Jan. 1, 2026.
Mamdani is a member of the Democratic party who first announced his decision to run in October of 2024. Since then, he has encouraged New York residents to vote for him in many ways, including utilizing different social media platforms. With an account on TikTok, Mamdani’s proposals and ideals for New York spread like wildfire over recent months, especially with the younger generation who have recently become eligible to vote.
Some of his proposals include fare-free city buses to help the larger population get around the city and universal free child care to help struggling families with children from ages six weeks to five years. As a Democrat myself, I am proud to see someone standing up for what they believe. This includes watching the large city of New York come together to vote for the change they want to see.
Although many of America’s cities voted blue in the recent mayoral election, Mamdani has become the nation’s most well-known mayor elect due to his ambitious goals. One of the main questions many have, including myself, is if Mamdani will truly change anything. I certainly hope so. With such large goals wanting to be attained, there is a sense of uncertainty on how these actions will take place. Free child care will cost the city millions of dollars every year, and it does not help that President Donald Trump has already spoken out about his dislike of Mamdani. Trump has even threatened to punish the city under Mamdani’s mayoral rule, to which Mamdani has responded he will not back down.
I do believe that Mamdani will change things in New York City. I simply hope he starts by taking small, smart steps, since the city is currently so expensive, which Mamdani also plans to address by cutting rent prices drastically. This way, the city can adjust to the new economic changes.
The other question many have is whether Mamdani’s attitude towards politics will be felt throughout the entire country. No matter what side you are on, Mamdani’s attitude has already been felt. I believe our country has separated so far in politics that it is no longer a matter of right or wrong, but whether you are happy about it, or upset.
Overall, I am happy to see Mamdani succeed in his election, and am looking forward to his term as mayor. His recent interviews are cohesive and intellectual, which is something to be said considering our current president cannot do either of those things. I hope his term will be eye-opening for many Americans, and that it encourages people to speak out during our country’s political battle.
