Rosalía’s new album, “Lux,” is exactly what I had hoped for to end off the year and more. Since the first time I listened to “El Mal Querer” in 2018, I have been waiting for her to go back and revisit the blend of theatrical storytelling and emotional depth in a continuation of the album. When I first started hearing whispers floating around online that “Lux” would echo some of that same charm that “El Mal Querer” had, I just knew this album was going to be exciting and unique. I must say, Rosalía absolutely did not disappoint. She took it to a whole new level.
First of all, this is an impressively innovative album in which Rosalía sings in 14 different languages. It ranges from opera to bold experimental pop, while still keeping those emotional threads that make her music feel alive. Furthermore, “Lux” features many artists of a variety of musical genres, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Björk, Yves Tumor, and Carminho, which I would argue sets the album apart from anything else that has been released this year.
Every single track in the album is equally unique; there is no doubt about that. “Lux” has a way of constantly surprising you, track after track, with new sounds and ideas. But despite all of these varied ideas — which some would expect to clash — “Lux” has a way of sounding cohesive, which takes the listener on a symphonic journey.
For example, in “La Perla,” Rosalía plays with elements of a traditional Mexican waltz while charmingly weaving such elements into a song critiquing toxic masculinity. It’s playful, witty, and sharp all at once.
Although it’s hard to choose just one favorite out of the entire album, “Berghain,” the lead single, has to be my absolute favorite. It’s haunting, cinematic, and emotionally overwhelming. It perfectly captures everything that “Lux” is.
So, album of the year? For me, most definitely. “Lux” is breathtaking and fearless, unlike anything I have listened to recently. I rate it 5 out of 5 big Oles.
