This year, the Parking Office has made several changes to the student parking permit application and distribution system in response to student needs. In an email interview with The Olaf Messenger, Public Safety Coordinator Mackenzie Mueller offered some insight into the new changes and why they were made: “Based on student feedback, we publicized the time that permit applications were going to open ahead of the application launch. We also implemented the class-year allocation system for permits. We wanted students to be able to plan ahead for parking permit applications due to the high demand for on-campus parking. We also wanted upperclassmen to feel supported in their academic journeys at St. Olaf by providing more opportunities for obtaining a parking permit.”
With the Parking Permit Application process for the 2026-27 academic year well underway, The Olaf Messenger turned to students to get a better understanding of how these changes were received by the student body.
“Since I am a rising senior, I’m not too worried,” Ellie Glenn ’27 said in an interview with The Olaf Messenger. “I feel bad for the underclassmen, since I am sure many sophomores have very valid reasons for needing a car on campus, but may not be able to secure a spot.”
In another interview with The Olaf Messenger, Moises Martinez-Estrella ’27 said, “… I bet [the underclassmen are] very frustrated because they have a lesser chance of getting a spot. If a student has an internship or a job off campus, this makes it harder for them.”
When asked what improvements he would like to see from the Parking Office going forward, Martinez-Estrella suggested improved methods of communication, such as an information session to benefit student understanding.
“The first time I heard about [the changes] … was in the emails,” Martinez-Estrella said. “And I wish they had consulted with the students because it affects all of the years and the students applying.”
Glenn suggested another lot.
“… Out-of-state students who might need a car to get to and from home, the fact that Olaf is separated from the town makes it so that every student would benefit from a car, or the option of a car/parking space, on campus,” Glenn said.
Mueller says that the Parking Office is always “working behind the scenes to improve parking,” and hopes students will appreciate the new changes to the system. She emphasizes that the Parking Office encourages students to give their feedback and asks that students attend the student parking focus group and provide their feedback on March 16 at 2:00 pm in Buntrock 144.
