Former St. Olaf student Waylon Kurts has pleaded guilty to an amended count of public nuisance in exchange for all other charges against him being dismissed. According to KARE 11, Kurts’ plea means that he admits to maintaining and permitting “a condition which unreasonably endangered the safety, health and repose of a considerable number of members of the public.”
Kurts was arrested in April 2023 after a St. Olaf custodian discovered and reported packaging — addressed to Kurts — for high-capacity firearm magazines in a trash container. Following the report, Public Safety searched his room and found a tactical vest, propane tanks, fireworks, lighter fluid, empty magazine and ammunition boxes, and a hand-drawn map of the Skoglund-Tostrud Athletic Center, among other concerning articles.
At the time of his arrest, Kurts was initially charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree assault, conspiracy to commit threats of violence, terroristic threats, and conspiracy to commit theft. The former two were later dismissed by a judge due to a lack of evidence. With Kurts’ recent plea, the terrorist threats and conspiracy to commit theft counts were also dropped.
As a result of his plea, Kurts will serve a 90-day sentence — delayed as he serves probation for one year — with credit for the 23 days he has already served while in custody. He will also perform 80 hours of community service.
