For those of us living out of state or country, going home isn’t cheap. If you’re planning to stay on campus this spring break — like me — I’ve compiled a list of my favorite things to do without having to leave Northfield or break your bank account!
- Watch a Movie for $5 — Before spring break starts, make sure to visit the Office for Student Activities in Buntrock, where you can purchase a discounted movie ticket for Canon Valley Cinema. It’s a general ticket, so once you get to the movie theater, you’ll be able to select your seat and the movie you want to watch.
- Check out break programming — The campus has a break programming committee, which puts on fun activities — even off campus! — for students who are staying here for breaks. They provide transportation, but spots are limited, so be sure to check out the academic year breaks page on St. Olaf’s website or look for posters around Buntrock as we get closer to spring break.
- Spend an afternoon downtown — The express bus is free with a student ID and has a stop right at Food Co-op, making it an ideal spot to be dropped off in downtown Northfield. Once downtown, you could visit a coffee shop, grab a meal, or take a relaxing walk along the river.
- Get crafty — Rolvaag Library has a space called The Cave right across from DiSCO on the fourth floor, where you can use art supplies and your creative vision to make fun crafts — maybe some new dorm decor or a card for a friend. You could stop at the Cage on the way there, get a fun beverage or treat, and let your creativity shine.
- Cook your favorite meal — During breaks, a program called The Lion’s Pantry provides basic food items and ingredients to support students’ limited food options during the break. Located in Ytterboe Hall and open to all Oles, you can grab 2-3 ingredients and get cozy by making a dish you enjoy.
If you’ve been bummed about staying on campus this break, I hope this list gives you some ideas for new things you can try!
