If you have been swamped with papers, articles, and work, and struck down with a cold like me this past week, I have found the perfect cure — romantic comedies. When you are slumped down and sniffling due to congestion or down in the pits of despair because your professor just will not quit on giving you work to do: shut off your brain, escape reality, and watch a romantic comedy. They are the perfect distraction from any and all responsibilities because who doesn’t love love? If you don’t know where to start, here are my top three romantic comedies that I have on repeat:
- “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days” — hands down, the best movie ever made. Maybe I’m biased because I’m a Capricorn and live up to the workaholic stereotype or that I’m an aspiring journalist, but there’s nothing better than this romcom. With the iconic Knicks and “You’re So Vain” scene, Kate Hudson, and Matthew McConaughey, what more do you want?
- “Love, Rosie” — maybe I’m sadistic, but I love how much this movie hurts. Absolutely no movie does childhood friends to lovers like Rosie and Sam. Even though I watch this movie about twice a year, it still gets to me every single time. The yearning. The pining. The angst! It’s a perfect distraction.
- “10 Things I Hate About You” — I. LOVE. THIS MOVIE. Kat Stratford is such an icon and I strive to be like her every single day. If there’s anything that I’ve learned from this movie, it’s to get yourself someone like Cameron James — never settle. Or get you someone who will sing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” to you in public, unless you get embarrassed easily. Applications to be my Cameron James are open, all are welcome to apply.
With finals approaching and the end of the year near, keep pushing through, everyone! If you need a reset or extra motivation, grab a blanket, get some ice cream, maybe a friend, and relax while watching a romcom. It’s healing, trust.
