I have a sweet tooth. There’s no hiding it, and I’ve come to accept more and more as I’ve aged. While I’ve tried to moderately limit my sugar intake moderately — especially after getting into a consistent morning running routine — I find that my impulse for a sweet treat during breakfast is too overpowering.
I look forward to the breakfast pastry selection in Stav each day. Chocolate croissants, muffins that vary in flavor, mini beignets, and the occasional raspberry Danish are all excellent additions to my daily breakfast. However, one pastry makes me genuinely excited when I see it sitting in the clear glass case, showcasing its beauty for all to see. It’s the scones. I can’t stop eating them.
After four years of college, I’ve come to the conclusion that scones are the best pastry offered by Bon Appétit. There’s a certain comfort to the scones. Texturally, they’re everything you want: firm enough not to crumble in your hands, but also pillowy after you take a bite. In terms of flavor, I recognize this may be the biggest point of contention. Are they the best scones I’ve had? No. But are they bad scones? Absolutely not. Sure, they may not be the most flavorful scones, but they still certainly hit the spot. The blueberry flavor has just enough blueberry where it’s not tasteless, but the white chocolate raspberry kind is by far the best flavor. If you’re like me and enjoy a weekly cinnamon chip scone from the Cage, you know that these larger scones are bursting with cinnamon and sweetness.
I get it, some people like other pastries. Some of the muffins are excellent, especially lemon poppyseed and cappuccino. The chocolate croissants do just enough to make someone happy. But there’s something about those scones. Perhaps I’m depraved, or have unknowingly developed a timely emotional connection with the scones due to a correlation between rough life events and my consumption of them. Either way, I will go to battle for the scones. And I’m looking for people to join me.
