On Saturday, Feb. 21, St. Olaf’s Programming Board hosted its annual Casino Night, featuring a Great Gatsby theme. The event took place in the King’s Dining Room and Ballrooms of Buntrock Commons. Students received poker chips at the entrance, which they could use to play blackjack, poker, bingo, and cash grab. At the end of the night, students traded the chips they won in the various games for raffle tickets, with prizes ranging from stationery kits and stylish dorm decor to high-tech products like the latest AirPods, a gaming keyboard, and an iconic “Miffy” speaker. 

Oles were dressed in their finest outfits: tuxedos, sparkly dresses, and long gowns, making it nearly a black tie event. At the entrance to the King’s Dining Room, students were served martini glasses with a sweet, glittery drink, adding to the luxurious atmosphere. 

Each room hosted a different casino game, while in the center of the King’s Dining Room, a live band was playing instrumental jazz music and creating a wonderful space for dancing and partying that Gatsby would definitely approve of . 

In the Ballrooms, there were more drinks, including an “Ole Palmer” and a cranberry lemonade, alongside several soft drinks. They also were serving snacks, including coconut cupcakes, chocolate cake pops, and drizzled rice krispy treats on a gold and silver table. Additionally, there was a photo backdrop at the entrance to the ballrooms, featuring a glittering, deep blue night sky decorated with stars and a yellow crescent moon. 

While enjoying treats and checking out the raffle prices placed at the far end of the ballroom, students lined up to snap a few photos with their friends. In this area, classical jazz was replaced by a pop playlist and a more intimate setting as some students slowdanced around the ballroom’s floor. 

Casino Night allowed students to relax, dress up, and gamble their chips to increase their chances of winning raffle prizes, all while enjoying delicious treats and a luxurious Saturday night scene.
