“Hoppers,” an animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, has flooded the movie theaters since its release on March 6. I recently went to see it with some friends, and despite being geared towards younger audiences, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the movie addressed real-world issues relevant to our broader society. As someone who is and has always been passionate about the well-being of the environment, I believe this movie will resonate with many viewers with its environmentally conscious narrative that I hope will guide young people as they grow up.
First, to provide a little bit of background — without spoilers — the film follows a young girl named Mabel who is extremely passionate about saving animals and the environment. She learns that a glade she loves has become a construction site for a new highway system and jumps into action. Meanwhile, local scientists have discovered a way to transform human consciousness and put it into robotic animals. When Mabel stumbles across this experiment, she finds herself in the body of a beaver. She uses her newfound body to explore the animal world and uncovers many of its shocking secrets.
The film presents several thought-provoking themes throughout, many of which are related to the environment. The movie highlights the relationship between the natural world and human society, employing humorous commentary to expose many of the power structures that exist within human society and between it and the environment. “Hoppers” emphasizes the rise of urban expansion and the dangers that urbanization poses to the natural spaces surrounding our cities and towns.
Additionally, the film focuses on environmental advocacy and the change that consistent and proactive efforts can make. The connections Mabel forms with many of the animals emphasize the importance of friendship and collaboration, as well as the power in standing up for what you believe in, even as a young person. The movie utilizes themes of environmental conservation, habitat restoration, and activism to drive its plot and engage its viewers throughout, creating a heartwarming story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
While “Hoppers” remains a lighthearted children’s film, I firmly stand by my claim that any college-aged student or adult would enjoy watching it. It sends a powerful and positive message to all viewers, especially the current youth, and highlights changes that can reshape the world for the better.
